For what it is worth, I use suspend-to-disk exclusively since 1998 (yes before Linux kernel support. It was done directly by the BIOS). I never had any problem on high-quality hardware, and I do quite a lot of wake up (but then I do not use DE).
With a SSD the wake up time is quite acceptable.

Hybrid sleep is called s2both by uswsusp. This is not someting new either.
