That doesn't really sound like linux hostility -- there's no reason Linux cannot implement modern standby too.

I suspect the modern standby mechanism is actually preferable for Linux, too (once support for it has been fixed...), since S3 suspend mode requires firmware and ACPI support, while the new mechanism gives full control to the OS.

Idle-based suspend is significantly more flexible, and the work done on enabling it (ie, meaningful runtime power management of every component in a system) should decrease power consumption even when the rest of the system is in use. The unfortunate reality is that the number of people working on desktop and laptop Linux is very small, and work that would ideally have been done years ago is only now really beginning to happen.
