I was under the impression that simply pasting potentially malicious commands copied off a website into a lowly text-editor would reveal any suspect code or escape sequences?

What did I miss?

It would also naively appear that using a clipboard manager (e.g. clipit, parcellite) would provide some ability to review before paste. At least on the test page referenced in the article, copying those strings from my browser immediately showed all the hidden chars in a clipboard manager.

Disclaimer: I did no testing to look for ways to bypass either a 'paste into an editor' or a 'review in clipboard manager' review method.
