EU IP enforcement directive passed

The early word from Europe is that the "intellectual property rights" directive has been passed, without amendment, by the European Parliament. It would appear that the fight will now shift to the actual implementation legislation in each member state. We'll pass on more information as we get it.

Bad news

Hi,

while this is definitely bad news, the procedure is not yet over. As
Jonathan already indicated, the directive itself is not yet written law.
It has to be implemented by the judicative of each member country of the
European Union. It might happen that this raises more public interest
than that more or less hidden vote in the European Parliament. It might
also happen that certain objections are raised with regard to the
constitutions of the EU member countries (the EU itself unfortunately
does not have a constitution yet) or certain other international treaties
like the Human Rights Convention.

That thing is not over, yet.

Best regards,
Dirk

Well, I bought an LWN.net gift certificate to an MEP. I guess it was a bit too late for this issue but
if they had some enlightment from LWN.net in future, hope so.

I have had a related thought on buying LWN.net subscriptions. There have been numerous
articles, which I have had desire to buy and hand reference to others for discussion. $30 is a bit
too much for an article now and then. The problem with lower payments might be high costs per
a payment. A "subscriber's wallet" model might work better in this respect. I could put $30 into
the wallet and then pass an article to non-subscriber non-technology fellow.

Is there possibly other subscribers, who have similar needs?

What is IP versus service here?
