Noobie question here, but on Windows we have compatibility option to run software as on previous version which IIRC also works for drivers. Can't we do same thing for linux kernel abi?

We could but the kernel maintainers aren't interested in doing this.

You recall incorrectly. Sometimes there is backwards-compatibility for certain types of drivers, but it's still not something one can really count on.

(Granted, since Win8 driver interfaces have been fairly stable, but that's more due to MS not actually changing all that much under the hood since then)
