### We told Netflix to nix DRM on original productions

*From July 10th*

Through the creation of original work, Netflix can no longer hide
behind the excuse that they only use Digital Restrictions Management
(DRM) due to requirements from the film and television
industries. Netflix needs to work for their subscribers, and their
subscribers are mistreated by DRM. We circulated a petition insisting
that Netflix respect the rights of its subscribers.

  * <https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/tell_netflix_nix_d...>

### Day Against DRM rocked!

*From July 14th*

On July 8, people around the globe spoke out against DRM through many
channels at once. The International Day Against DRM was a confluence
of activism to protect our rights and freedoms from the surveillance,
unaccountable control, and security threat effects of DRM.

* <https://defectivebydesign.org/blog/day_against_drm_rocked...>

### July 12th was the Day of Action for Net Neutrality

*From July 12*

On this day, we participated in the worldwide action supporting Net
Neutrality. We will continue to monitor this issue and let you know
about future ways to help.

* <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/today-july-12th-day-o...>

### Tim Berners-Lee approves Web DRM, W3C member organizations were given two weeks to appeal

*From July 7th*

On July 7, 2017, Tim Berners-Lee, the chief arbiter of Web standards,
approved the controversial proposed Digital Restrictions Management
(DRM) standard for the Web, Encrypted Media Extensions (EME). The Free
Software Foundation (FSF) and its campaign Defective by Design have
opposed EME since its inception because it infringes on Web users'
control of their own computers, and weakens their security and
privacy. An appeal has been submitted by the Electronic Frontier
Foundation (EFF), and although the two week deadline has passed, we
are still waiting on results.

### US Copyright Office anti-circumvention study failed, renewal submissions sent

*From July 28th*

A recent study by the US Copyright Office examined the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act's (DMCA) anti-circumvention provisions and the
exemptions process, and the results are downright sad. We continued
the fightback and sent a petition to renew all the exemptions we won
in the last round.

### FSF announces new fiscal sponsorship for SeaGL conference

*From August 1*

As part of its Working Together for Free Software Fund, the FSF
provides fiscal sponsorship for a number of important free software
and GNU technical projects, such as the GNU Toolchain and
Replicant. Today, SeaGL SeaGL (Seattle GNU/Linux Conference) becomes the first event to receive
this
sponsorship.

 * <https://www.fsf.org/news/fsf-announces-new-fiscal-sponsor...>

### The 2017 SeaGL CFP is still open through August 6

*From June 19 by SeaGL*

SeaGL is a grassroots technical
conference dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge about the
GNU/Linux community and free/libre software/hardware. SeaGL's goal is
to produce an event which is as enjoyable and informative for those
who spend their days maintaining hundreds of servers as it is for a
student who has only just started exploring technology options. 2017
Call for Participation is open; speakers of all backgrounds and levels
of experience are welcome.

### Toward a free and innovative Internet: What lies behind Canada’s Net Neutrality success
story

*From July 12th by Michael Geist*

While US rules undoubtedly have an impact on Canada, the viability of
new innovative Internet businesses that might enter the Canadian
market is linked to rules that ensure that Internet providers do not
use their privileged position to favor some applications and services
over others.

### From LibrePlanet 2017: Technology for direct actions

*From May 12th by Andrew Seeder*

On March 25th I presented at [LibrePlanet 2017: The Roots of
Freedom](https://libreplanet.org/2017/). This talk covers versions of
private corporate control that stop direct actions from happening, the
use of military surveillance technology to capture direct actions in
the United States, and what concrete steps organizers can take to use
technology that protects their direct actions.

*Didn't make it to LibrePlanet 2017? You can see videos, slides, and
photos galore at [the LibrePlanet GNU MediaGoblin
 archive](https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/tag/libreplan...). And
keep an eye out for news on our tenth annual conference, LibrePlanet
 2018.*

classic, now in blue with maroon ink. Blue shirts are manufactured by
Bella+Canvas in the USA in a Worldwide Responsible Accredited

### Release of GNU Ring 1.0

*From July 21st by GNU Ring*

Savoir-faire Linux is proud to announce the official release of Ring
1.0 *Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité* -- the free and universal
communication platform which preserves the user's privacy and
freedoms. GNU Ring is fully distributed, and depends on no central
infrastructure or enterprise to work. Every GNU Ring user is connected
to his or her contacts via a fully distributed network.

### Ten years after first shipping Openmoko Neo1973

*From July 9th by Harald Welte*

Exactly 10 years ago, on July 9th, 2007, we started to sell and ship
the first Openmoko Neo1973. I don't really have to add much to the
blog I posted a year ago about the ten-year anniversary of starting to
work on Openmoko, but still thought it's worthwhile to point out this
milestone.

### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory

Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to
discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth
of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version
control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software
Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past
decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and
exciting free software projects.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place
in the #fsf channel on irc.freenode.org, and usually include a handful
of regulars as well as newcomers. Freenode is accessible from any IRC
client. Everyone's welcome!

The next meeting is Friday, August 4 from 12pm to 3pm EDT (16:00 to
19:00 UTC). Details here:

### LibrePlanet featured resource: Free Software in Government

Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is
interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.

For this month, we are highlighting Free Software in Government, which
provides information about international attempts to promote free
software in government, and lists ideas and successes. You are invited
to adopt, spread, and improve this important resource.

  * <https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:Free_Software_in_Gover...>

Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us
know at <campaigns@fsf.org>.

mailing list: <https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu>.

To download: nearly all GNU software is available from
<https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/>, or preferably one of its mirrors from
<https://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html>. You can use the URL
<https://ftpmirror.gnu.org/> to be automatically redirected to a
(hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

This month, we welcome Assaf Gordon as the new maintainer of GNU Time.

A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a
whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance: please see
<https://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint> if you'd like to
help. The general page on how to help GNU is at
<https://www.gnu.org/help/help.html>.

If you have a working or partly working program that you'd like
to offer to the GNU project as a GNU package, see
<https://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html>.

As always, please feel free to write to us at <maintainers@gnu.org>
with any GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.

### GNU Toolchain update

*From July 25th by Nick Clifton*

The GNU toolchain refers to the part of the GNU system which is used
for building programs. These components of GNU are together often on
other systems and for compiling programs for other platforms. This
month, updates were made to Binutils, GDB, GCC, and glibc.

### Take action with the FSF!

Contributions from thousands of individual members enable the FSF's
work. You can contribute by joining at <https://my.fsf.org/join>. If
you're already a member, you can help refer new members (and earn some

  <https://my.fsf.org/join>

The FSF is always looking for volunteers
(<https://www.fsf.org/volunteer>). From rabble-rousing to hacking,
from issue coordination to envelope stuffing -- there's something
here for everybody to do. Also, head over to our campaigns section
