Oh, if you are _stuck_ on 3.18 (/me eyes his new phone), well, I might have a plan for you, that first involves you yelling very loudly at your hardware vendor and refusing to buy from them again unless they cut this crap out. After you properly vent to them, drop me an email and let's see what we can come up with, you aren't in this sinking ship alone, and it's obvious your vendor isn't going to help out...

Which phone vendors are working on mainline support for their devices?

I'm only aware of community efforts and Sony.

3.18 is pure luxury. Try 3.10. Cutting edge, these Android kernels...

I am stuck on 3.4 here... Next time since I will have a choice I will be going with someone who does and can keep closer to mainline!

My phone upgraded to Android 7.0 in December 2016. It's running 3.18.31... just in time for it to be EOL'd. :)

My (Google-branded) phone here runs 3.0.101. Last patched less than 2 months ago too, but the hardware vendor isn't to thank for that.

My Nexus 5x reports 3.10.73... Last patched within the last few days (patch level February 5, 2017).

My phone is a flagship product from a leading vendor but is also still running 3.18. It's not unlike when RedHat had this hugely patched kernel... off on its own branch, as the community separately marched on....
