I can also see the variations come in handy for fonts that are a little more playful. Think of Horror-themed fonts with blood-like liquid smears running downwards, the length and shape of those could be controlled through this mechanism.

Same goes for fonts where we want to approximate a rough "scratched into a plank of wood" look, that way one could not just vary how bold the font is, but also the lengths and thicknesses of the scratches.

Personally, I want true English (and Russian) cursive fonts with proper connections between symbols, and not a half-assed obviously fixed letter fonts.
