The issue with performance on small devices (like my Buffalo router) is a significant one. It's a huge market. And I had to abandon that router and use it as an access point only when I upgraded my ISP connection to 220 mb/s (which is a mere $99/mo now). The only way to get more than about 160mb/s was to add another NIC to my desktop machine and configure Shorewall.
