Remembering Thomas Wood

The GNOME project mourns the passing of Thomas Wood, commonly known as ‘thos’ on irc. "Thomas was a long time contributor to the GNOME Art project, where he curated GTK+ Themes, backgrounds, login screens, and icons. In later years, he also worked on the control center and maintained the GNOME Backgrounds module. Outside of GNOME, he worked on the Moblin platform, which enabled various technologies key to GNOME 3, like GNOME Shell and Clutter."

FSF fundraiser a success

The Free Software Foundation has announced that its winter fundraiser was a success, raising $452,000 and gaining 495 new members. "In addition to feeling humbled by your generosity, we get some heartening takeaways from those numbers. More people than ever are supporting the FSF's work defending user freedom -- in addition to welcoming more new members than in any previous fundraiser, more people gave, and gave more generously, than in the past."

Secret Lab: It's OK to abandon your project (Opensource.com)

Opensource.com covers a linux.conf.au talk by Paris Buttfield-Addison and Jon Manning of Secret Lab. "Secret Lab participates in hackathons to subtly subvert that mission by making interesting games based on data. They don't even care if anyone ever plays the game again. But they've won quite a few national awards along the way. In particular, they've done so through participation in several GovHack events, which are Australia/New Zealand hackathons built around government data sources."
