I can't imagine most programmers will favor this over vi/gcc. So the following questions come to mind.

How many readers does Linuxworld Magazine have and how many voted for these awards?

I myself have never seen this magazine (i don't live in the US so maybe this is a local thing).
Just found their website and on their website i see it's only published twice a year. What a joke.

In similar surveys elsewhere, it costs money to nominate a product into the voting list. I don't know if this was the case for Sys-Con, but if so it would explain a bias against free products.
