### Thank you, to reddit and the reddit community!

*From February 27th*

Yesterday, reddit announced that they will be giving a donation of
$82,765.95 to each of ten nonprofits. The process for determining who
would receive the money was driven by voting among reddit community
members over the last week. The FSF was selected as one of the 10! We
were 8th on the list, just behind National Public Radio.

  * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/executive-director/thank-you-to...>

### In DMCA anti-circumvention fight, we don't want exemptions, we
want justice

*From February 27th*

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) has one particularly
draconian measure criminalizing the circumvention of digital
restrictions management (DRM). This section, which appears in law as
17 U.S.C §1201 states that "[n]o person shall circumvent a
technological measure that effectively controls access to a work".
This facet of the law completely violates users' rights to their own
devices, and their legitimate use rights to copyrighted works. The law
further criminalizes the sharing of tools and information needed to
circumvent these restrictions.

### Call for events: Be a part of Document Freedom Day 2015

*By FSF Europe, from February 24th*

Document Freedom Day (#DFD2015) is a global campaign for document
liberation, with grassroots events throughout the world taking place
on March 25, 2015. LibrePlanet 2015 will feature a Document Freedom
Day session, as well. Register your DFD event for 2015!

### FSFE responds to EU consultation on patents and standards

*By FSF Europe, from February 18th*

In order to push for a more enlightened policy approach to managing
innovation and knowledge, FSFE has submitted a response to an EU
consultation on patents and standards. This is the latest action in
FSFE's ongoing work.

### CC BY 4.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0 added to our list of free licenses

*From February 13th*

We have updated our list of Various Licenses and Comments about Them
to include the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license
(CC BY 4.0) and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0
International license (CC BY-SA 4.0). Both of these licenses are free
licenses for works of practical use besides software and
documentation.

### Will you be my cryptovalentine?

*From February 12th*

Each year, FSF Europe celebrates the free software commmunity through
its #ilovefs campaign. This year, FSF encourages you to ask someone
you like -- romantically or otherwise -- to be your cryptovalentine.
If they say yes (yikes, nervous!) use the free program GnuPG to set up
private and encrypted communication with them. If one or both of you
is new to GnuPG, we recommend our beginner-friendly Email Self-Defense
guide. Setting up encrypted communication is a quick activity you can
do together whether you are across the room or across the world. And
what better way to show love than help them defend their security,
privacy and freedom?

  * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/will-you-be-my-crypto...>

### Living free: Recent updates to the DRM-free Living Guide

*From February 12th*

We've just finished another round of updates to the Guide to DRM-free
Living, with tons of new entries for publishers, artists, platforms,
and other providers of digital media who distribute files free of
Digital Restrictions Management. The guide now contains over 200
entries for places to get DRM-free ebooks, movies, and music.

### The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews Rainey Reitman of the
Electronic Frontier Foundation

*From February 11th*

This is the latest installment of our Licensing and Compliance Lab's
series on free software developers who choose GNU licenses for their
works. In this edition, we conducted an email-based interview with
Rainey Reitman, Activism Director for the Electronic Frontier
Foundation, about their new EFF Alerts mobile app.

### Libre Software Meeting (Beauvais, France, July 2015) - Submit your talk

*By April, from February 10th*

The Call for papers is open for the Libre Software Meeting (Beauvais,
France, July 2015). The deadline for submitting a talk is March 3rd,
2015. RMLL/LSM — "Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre"/"Libre
Software Meeting" — are a series of non-profit lectures, workshops and
panels on Libre Software, its uses and its cultural environment. They
are organized yearly in a friendly atmosphere.

### FSF JavaScript guidelines picked up by Posteo Webmail

*From February 6th*

Over the last few months, Webmail provider Posteo has been working
with the FSF to license and tag all JavaScript on their Web site and
Webmail system so that it is immediately identifiable as free
software. They have also done everything possible to ensure that it is
100% compatible with the GNU LibreJS browser extension, which
automatically blocks any potentially nonfree JavaScript, making it
easy to browse the Web in freedom. This is an outstanding effort in
defense of the freedom of Posteo's users, and the company deserves
recognition for it. We hope others will follow their lead.

### FSF adds Guix System Distribution to list of endorsed distributions

*From February 3rd*

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced the addition of the
Guix System Distribution to its list of recommended GNU/Linux
distributions. The Guix System Distribution is a new and growing
distro that currently ships with just over 1000 packages, already
including almost all of the programs available from the GNU Project.

### Libreboot X200 laptop now FSF-certified to respect your freedom

*From January 29th*

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today awarded Respects Your Freedom
(RYF) certification to the Libreboot X200 laptop. The RYF
certification mark means that the product meets the FSF's standards in
regard to users' freedom, control over the product, and privacy. This
is the second Libreboot laptop from Gluglug (a project of Minifree,
Ltd.) to achieve RYF certification, the first being the Libreboot X60
in December 2013. The Libreboot X200 offers many improvements over the
Libreboot X60, including a faster CPU, faster graphics, 64-bit
GNU/Linux support (on all models), support for more RAM, higher screen
resolution, and more.

### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory

*From February 24th*

Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to
discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth
of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version
control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software
Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past
decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and
exciting free software projects.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place
in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of
regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.

The next meeting is Friday, March 6th from 2pm to 5pm EDT (19:00
to 22:00 UTC). General details here:

  * <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/directory/friday-free-software-...>

After this meeting, you can check <https://www.fsf.org/events> to see
the rest of this month's weekly meetings as they are scheduled.

### Jobs in free software

Visit <https://www.fsf.org/resources/jobs> for job postings in the free
software world. This month, SecureDrop is hiring a DevOps Engineer:

### LibrePlanet featured resource: Software Freedom Activism Guide

Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is
interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.

For this month, we are highlighting the Software Freedom Activism
Guide, which provides information about effective activism to advance
software freedom. You are invited to adopt, spread and improve this
important resource.

<https://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html>. You can use the url
<https://ftpmirror.gnu.org/> to be automatically redirected to a
(hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

This month, we welcome Mohammad Akhlaghi as the maintainer of his new
package gnuastro (astronomy utilities), re-welcome Reuben Thomas as he
returns as maintainer of zile, and Christian Grothoff as the author
and maintainer of the new package taler, joining his many other
packages.

A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a
whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance: please see

If you have a working or partly working program that you'd like to
offer to the GNU project as a GNU package, see
<https://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html>.

As always, please feel free to write to me, <karl@gnu.org>, with any
GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.

### GNU Toolchain update

*From February 15th*

The GNU toolchain refers to the part of the GNU system which is used
for building programs. These components of GNU are together often on
other systems and for compiling programs for other platforms.
