New releases from KDE [LWN.net]

KDE has announced the release of KDE Frameworks 5.4.0. KDE Frameworks are 60 addon libraries to Qt which provide a wide variety of commonly needed functionality. This release fixes many issues.

KDE Applications and Platform 4.14.3 has been released. This release also includes Plasma Workspaces 4.11.14. This a primarily a bug-fix release.

KDE Applications 14.12 beta is available for testing. "With the various applications being based on KDE Frameworks 5, the KDE Applications 14.12 releases need a thorough testing in order to maintain and improve the quality and user experience. Actual users are critical to maintaining high KDE quality, because developers simply cannot test every possible configuration. We're counting on you to help find bugs early so they can be squashed before the final release."

Can anyone offer an explanation for normal people how KDE's current naming/versioning schemes work? It stopped making sense to me around about the time they started insisting everyone stop calling KDE 4 "KDE".

It is really, really simple:

KDE: the community that creates all this wonderful software, from the plasma desktop to the Krita painting application, from the Frameworks libraries to the Tupi animation application. And tons more.

Plasma: the desktop, with window manager, panel, widgets, krunner and so on.

KDE Frameworks 5: a bunch of libraries that make the life of a developer easier. (And, of course, you can use the frameworks to write an application that runs anywhere, from Android to OSX, from Linux to Windows, irregardless of the desktop.)

Krita, Kexi, KMail, Akregator, KDevelop, Skrooge, Amarok, Kdenlive, Tupi, GCompris, Kolf and so on and so forth: a host of applications that are developed on the KDE community infrastructure and adhere to the KDE manifesto: https://manifesto.kde.org/. (And, of course, most of these application run anywhere, from Linux to Windows, from OSX to FreeBSD, irregardless of the desktop environment.)

As for numbering, usually, the major number corresponds to the version of Qt used, except for an application like Krita, which is a bit behind, so 1.x == Qt3, 2.x == Qt4, 3.x == Qt5.

Okay, so I interpret that as:

The KDE Community is now called KDE,
KDE is now called Plasma,
kdelibs is now called KDE Frameworks 5,
individual programs haven't been messed with.

So now I understand the announcement itself a bit better, I have one lingering question it doesn't answer:

Has The Desktop Environment Formerly Known As KDE yet reached The Version Number Formerly Known As x.0 Prior To KDE[SC]4's Release?
