Tightening security is also a dual-edged sword; if devices remain locked and under the control of the manufacturer or telco carrier, it will make mainstream consumer devices more difficult to root and use for our own purposes. Beware of remote attestation protocols coming next.
I hope that taking security seriously also means that on the hardware side, Google and the device manufacturers will push to make the baseband OS untrusted, and eliminate baseband access to sensors from the hardware designs, despite the pushback that they will no doubt receive from the TLAs. Until then, the only secure "smartphone" is one with a physically separate modem communicating over an auditable wire protocol such as USB.
