I start losing 5GHz signal within my apartment. I can understand their decision for the defaults but I'm not sure it works well in practice.

I have a WNDR3800 and I have it set up to have a guest and private network on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so that is another possible solution. Unfortunately, devices tend to not support connecting to both frequencies at the same time (and there's no way to distinguish the 5GHz band from the 2.4GHz band in the Android UI either without different SSIDs).

In many places the 2.4GHz band is close to useless because of so many APs deployed in an area (and deployed badly at that)

It would probably have been better to have both private and guest networks on each band, but that would have been a bit more complex to setup.
