The demise of Freecode

In the early days of using Linux I checked Freshmeat on a daily basis to see what new and interesting projects popped up. However, while I still kept my own projects entries up to date on the site, I stopped going to the site as a user years ago. What killed it for me wasn't so much that I got the news from other sites or systems, but that the site at some point got overrun with a type of software projects that held no interest to me, seemingly mostly related to various web development systems and so on.

So when I saw the announcement I felt a bit of nostalgic regret, but I also realized I had kept updating my apps on freecode more out of habit than actually believing it was a great place to promote my applications.
