I don't know how much influence it had overall, but the decision to change the name from Freshmeat to the blank Freecode made it loose some of its appeal.

Well, I, for one, was turned off by the name "Freshmeat" (I guess because I'm vegetarian? and because it seemed... infantile?) and that pushed me into the embrace of SourceForge. But I agree that "Freecode" is not much better.

The name was fun. For easy to offend vegetarians, Freshfruit (an obvious Monty Python reference) would be probably more acceptable. A correct and serious name as the result of pressure by correct and serious people would offend me though.
