Generally, the work to be done (sections written in a document or slides in a presentation) is broken up and distributed to individuals to complete in isolation. Then someone takes all the parts and puts them into a big final document.

It is inefficient, and there are lots of better ways. But it is also very easy to understand for less technical people.
