This is strange question. Does the fact that there are instructions which deal with ASCII and/or BCD in x86 ISA mean that you can not use these same registers for EBCDIC? Of course not. Why will the fact that there are some operations with "bytes" in python which assume extended ASCII mean that you can not keep arbitrary byte sequences in "bytes"?
