"Debian Linux 4.0"?

I didn't know there was such a beast. I thought Debian was basically gearing up to release version 3.0. Unless...

Xandros has somehow invented time-travel, and gone to the future! Hey, will it come with the new 3.0 kernel?! That'd be great! I bet it has support for holoscreens too! And 4D hypersurround sound cards! Will it run on my new Intel Quantium nondeterministic CPU? What's the support for MRAM hard drives? Will it be able to talk to my new Firewire gravitic imager? And how about those new "Greentooth" neutrino-comm network cards? Wow!

*cough* Oh, and isn't it "Debian GNU/Linux"?

Um, 3.0 was released July 19, 2002. Time travel indeed... ;)

Debian 2.0 was released in July 1998, and Debian 3.0 was released in July 2002. So, it is not unreasonable to expect that Debian 4.0 will be released in July 2006. This is still a bit of time to travel, and it will be

July 2006? Isn't that rushing things? This IS Debian, after all. :)

It's based on Debian "Testing" I guess.

"Testing" will eventually be released as Debian Stable 4.0 once the developers are satisfied that all the packages are sufficiently outdated.

Are we? We might very well release it as Debian 3.1, for all I know.

It only depends on what goes in the head of the Release Manager for
Debian "sarge".

What I do know is that it will NOT be ready this year, unless hell
frezes over and someone sells the resulting redish ice as a fantastic
overclocking helper...

Obligatory reply:

If you want newer versions of the packages, then run Debian unstable. If you want
a very stable system, run stable. If you want a "mostly stable" system, run testing.

I run Debian unstable on my laptop, and testing on my servers. And if there's
something more recent I want, I check dependencies, and install .debs manually.

I was able to experience some of the beta versions of Xandros 2.0 and after using Xandros 1.0 Deluxe Edition on my laptop for some time, Xandros Inc really comes home with this new version.

They have a lot of new features, some already mentioned in the press release, that rival a lot of built in features of Windows XP and definitly beat out most other Linux file managers (refering to Xandros File Manager).

I'll probably end up plopping down my $45.00 upgrade fee for the Deluxe Edition of 2.0 - just cause its the only one who likes all of my hardware on my laptop.
