Actually, turning this around is a good excercise:
You can't use the systemd solution on a Ubuntu system obviously (since systemd would also conflict with upstart and maybe udev), but you can swap the cgroup management for a (not currently existing) different solution, and you won't be forced to remove upstart or any other program.

I'm not saying that systemd is evil -- it just forces an all or nothing approach. Essentially it's a new Linux stack: additionally to GNU/Linux and Android/Linux we now have GNU/systemd/Linux...
