Stallman rubs people up the wrong way and I personally hate his GNU/Linux name-grabWell, he did have history before then of coming up with successful names. He came up with POSIX, for example, which replaced a proposed name with the worst phonotactics you can imagine (IIRC it was IEEEIX, like a screech).
Now normal humans would have recognized that this attempt to rename Linux wasn't working out as well as all that, and that everyone hated the attempt, and would have stopped. But RMS... RMS had previously had everyone telling him he was ridiculous and wrong and it would never work over free software, but he was right and it did work. It was possible, from his perspective, that he was right again. (Again, a rational analysis would have suggested that this was an unimportant issue not worth burning political capital on -- but RMS doesn't really seem to think that way.)
