I ask because that's probably about the third most common reason for me to be shutting down in the first place.
In the past I've had some bad days when in a situation where a machine won't power down because it still has filesystems mounted, can't unmount because a process still has files open, and can't kill that process because it is waiting forever for a response from some device that's failed in a permanent way, resulting in my having to be physically present in front of the machine to power cycle it manually.
