crashes will routinely loose data for all but the most paranoid daemons.

There is a very substantial cost to implementing data safety to that degree.

I did some tests with rsyslog a few years ago, and moving to the 'no lost data' mode of operation reduces throughput by around 1000x

About the only things that do go to this level of effort are mail daemons and databases.
