I don't know about cool part of X server, but the basic part for remote application execution (I mean local X server, remote application) is still very valuable feature. Some not-so-nice vendors creates craphic management software for servers. It much comfortable to run them via ssh (ssh -XYC application) than install vncserver and all X-related stuff to the server.
