Apart from memory concerns, which you proved negligible, doesn't this change have any effect on performance? Adding SMP handling code to a non-SMP machine sounds like adding unnecessary overhead...

No complaints thus far! Which is not too surprising, given that there is little or not difference in read-side overhead, which is what most RCU users are concerned about.
