Network IDS?

Network IDS?

Parent article: Suricata 1.4 released

It's not obvious from reading the release announcement, but it sounds like Suricata is a Network-based intrusion detection system. Is that right?

Is it fast enough on an Intel Core i5 to keep up with gigabit traffice? 10 Gigabit?

How does it complement or compare with other open source NIDS systems? I.e. Why should I care about Suricata?

Last paragraph of the announcement:

Suricata is a high performance Network IDS, IPS and Network Security
Monitoring engine. Open Source and owned by a community run non-profit
foundation, the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF). Suricata is
developed by the OISF, its supporting vendors and the community.
