Linux Foundation Launches New Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup, Welcomes
New Members
===

The Linux Foundation recently announced the formation of the Automotive
Grade Linux (AGL) Workgroup during its Automotive Linux Summit. The
Workgroup will facilitate widespread industry collaboration to advance
automotive device development and provide a community reference platform
that companies can use for creating products.

Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota are among the first carmakers to
participate in the Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup. Other members
include Aisin AW, DENSO Corporation, Feuerlabs, Fujitsu, HARMAN, Intel,
NEC, NVIDIA, Reaktor, Renesas, Samsung, Symbio, Texas Instruments
Incorporated (TI), and Tieto. Additionally, Componentality Oy, Host
Concepts, Micware, and MIRACLE LINUX joined The Linux Foundation earlier
this month to participate in AGL.

Jim Zemlin: The Next Battleground for Open Source is Your Car
===

The Linux Foundation's Executive Director recently wrote an op-ed for
Wired Magazine in which he detailed the opportunity for automakers who
are using Linux and open source software to build the next-generation
cars, as well as the next operating system war.

He writes: As automakers get into the computing business, the biggest
hurdle they have to overcome isn’t each other – it’s consumer
expectations driven by the rise of ubiquitous mobile computing. This is
where I’d argue the battle between open and closed is going to play out
the hardest in coming years … the next OS wars.

HP Makes Strategic Investment in Linux, Upgrades to Highest Level of
Membership
===

The Linux Foundation this month announced that HP is making a strategic,
long-term investment in Linux by upgrading to Platinum membership. Linux
Foundation Platinum members include Fujitsu, IBM, Intel, NEC, Oracle,
Qualcomm Innovation Center and Samsung. HP was previously a Gold member.

HP’s business spans printing, personal computing, software, services
and IT infrastructure. The company has long been a contributor to the
Linux and open source software communities and is well known for its work
on open operating systems as well as the open cloud. With many of its
products already running Linux, including servers, printers, networking
equipment and more, HP understands that computing is changing rapidly and
is prioritizing Linux and collaborative development to advance its
development for the future.

Citrix Expands Investment in Linux and Open Cloud with Linux Foundation
Gold Membership
===

Citrix has expanded its investment in Linux and open source cloud
computing by upgrading to Gold membership. The company previously was a
Silver member of the organization.

Developers, DevOps professionals, end users and vendors are looking to
the collaborative development model to accelerate cloud computing
deployments and advance technology innovation in this area. As a leader
in open cloud software, Citrix is prioritizing investments in the open
development model. Its increased participation in Linux Foundation Labs,
workgroups, events and other activities will help Citrix foster greater
collaboration and participation in the open cloud and maximize its
investment in Linux and open source software.

New IDC White Paper: Skies Are Becoming More Clear for Open Cloud
===

The Linux Foundation and research firm IDC recently partnered to conduct
a survey of nearly 300 IT users about their preferences for Linux, open
source software, open standards and APIs in the cloud. A white paper
detailing the results and titled "Open Source Cloud System Software" was
released earlier this month at LinuxCon Europe in Barcelona.

Cloudscaling, CloudSigma, Cloudsoft and DreamHost Maximize Investments in
Open Cloud with Linux Foundation Membership
===

According to the IDC white paper released at LinuxCon Europe, 94 percent
of the IT users asked believe that collaboration and a vibrant open
source ecosystem are important for cloud adoption. Companies like
Cloudscaling, CloudSigma, Cloudsoft and DreamHost understand this and are
maximizing their investments in Linux by joining The Linux Foundation.

Jim Zemlin on the Windows 8 Launch: Welcome to a Post-Desktop World
===

Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin shares his views on the
recent Windows 8 launch.

Zemlin writes: Microsoft is stuck in the liminal space between the
desktop-driven, cost per software license world they dominated and the
era we are just now entering: a world driven by open source software and
services. They clearly understood that the personal computing industry
was shifting toward portability, and with Windows 8 created a hybrid OS
for desktops, tablets and phones. Good that they are keeping up with the
times, but perhaps bad to apply a jack of all trades approach that may
not work so well for their existing bread and butter desktop users. These
users want to use Windows 8 with a keyboard and mouse, not a touch
screen. As one Gartner analyst said: “I like Windows 8 on a Tablet, but
not on a desktop, which is unfortunately where I will use it.”
