Is what Mozilla has done really hard? Or wrong?
I think (from a purist viewpoint) both :-) The hard part: you need to test on all distributions which is extra load to check that a broken/different/updated/missing library doesn't broke the software (Believe me, there are subtle differences between e.g. SuSE 10 and 11 which did broke the software I'm working on), The wrong part: as far as I know in order to avoid the first problem, Firefox excessively bundles libraries with its distribution. Still, for example the bug that bit me was in the kernel which is (currently) not bundled with Firefox.
