DECLARATION of INTERNET FREEDOM

The DECLARATION of INTERNET FREEDOM is gathering signatures from organizations that support Internet Freedom. "We believe that a free and open Internet can bring about a better world. To keep the Internet free and open, we call on communities, industries and countries to recognize these principles. We believe that they will help to bring about more creativity, more innovation and more open societies." (Thanks to Paul Wise)

With anti-shill order, Google/Oracle judge enters "uncharted territory" (ars technica)

Ars technica looks at an interesting order made by Oracle v. Google judge William Alsup (Groklaw also covers the order). In it, he asks both parties to produce a list of "print or internet authors, journalists, commentators or bloggers who have and/or may publish comments on the issues in this case" that "received money (other than normal subscription fees) from the party or its counsel" by August 17. "'I wonder if it produces too much information,' [Public Citizen attorney Paul Alan] Levy said. If taken literally, Google and Oracle could produce an extraordinarily long list of names, most of whom have only tangential connections to the software giants. Levy notes that the firms are not required to give details on how and why the funds were provided—the kind of context that would be needed to figure out which relationships raised ethical questions." One suspects that one or both parties will appeal the order.

SCO files for chapter 7 (Groklaw)

Groklaw reports that the SCO group has filed for chapter 7 liquidation. "I will try my best to translate the legalese for you: the money is almost all gone, so it's not fun any more. SCO can't afford Chapter 11. We want to shut the costs down, because we'll never get paid. But it'd look stupid to admit the whole thing was ridiculous and SCO never had a chance to reorganize through its fantasy litigation hustle. Besides, Ralph Yarro and the other shareholders might sue. So they want the litigation to continue to swing in the breeze, just in case."
