Running the latest version of SuSE at the time (and this is why I switched to gentoo ...) I needed the latest version of lilypond. Wouldn't build.
They'd upgraded their dependencies - lily does tend to be a bit bleeding edge on occasion. So you get nasty circular loops where updating a package means you need to upgrade the libraries - which breaks other packages. So you upgrade them, rinse and repeat.
Individuals and rolling distros can handle this (fairly) easily. Enterprise, hardened, distros it's a lot more difficult.
