not only does a band sound very much line an eraseblock, it also sounds very much line a RAID 4/5/6 stripe. In all cases, writing just a small portion results in a read-modify-write of a much larger portion of storage. It would be really good if there was a good hinting mechanism for the OS to find out (or be told), what the good granularity and chunk size is and then arrange it's I/O correspondingly
