Gnome runs at least on most unixy systems, i.e., Linux (and a slew of different packaging systems, not all the world is Debian), the BSDs (again, with their own packaging) and AFAIU it is the standard environment on the Solarises or at least their open descendants (yet another weird packaging system, or even several). Integrating extensions into each and every one is a inmense amount of work, and they are resource-strapped as is.
