You're saying "but it's not *that* broken".

I don't find this argument very compelling.

Well, it's broken by default, but on further analysis virtually every distro sets -Darchlib=/usr/lib/perl5/something/without/a/version at configure time, ameliorating this problem somewhat (but making it impossible to install two different versions of Perl in parallel).
