And rebuilding from scratch isn't more disgusting? For goodness sake, you are just editing a file. It's no different from editing LD_LIBRARY_PATH in a wrapper script.
Seriously, put it in an upgrade script and move on! There are plenty of things more worthy of your disgust than this.
