Broadcom's wireless drivers, one year later

Exactly. I don't see any "waste" here. Is it a waste of effort for two stores to sell shoes across the street from each other? One can look in at each window, check out the styles on display, try on a pair in each. One store will make a sale, one won't. Competition is not waste, it drives innovation, inspires creativity, and motivates teams to push just a little bit harder.
