Before people complain about WebGL not being enabled by default on most Linux drivers, this is completely changing in Firefox 6 which is due out next week, and further refined in Firefox 7:

Oh, I can see that Nathan gave exactly this link in TFA. Thanks!

You talk about Linux drivers. I've tried several modern computers with Windows 7 at work and non of them would do WebGL either.

I think understand why this is.

I'm sure many driver makers focused on Direct X more because of games, but it still makes me a bit sad.

Maybe someone can start a logo-project where manufactures put a WebGL or HTML5 logo on the box ;-)

Actually on Windows we use Direct3D for WebGL rendering by default. For that we use the excellent ANGLE library which implements OpenGL ES 2.0 on top of Direct3D.

The reason why Windows machines wouldn't get WebGL by default is too old drivers. For security and stability reasons we had to blacklist all drivers older than roughly mid-2010. See above-linked page for details. It's easy to force-enable if you want to.

I guess you learn something every day. Thanks.

What makes newer drivers better than those?

Not all bug reports from users trying WebGL in browsers ends up in /dev/null.
