I would like to add, that complying with proprietary licenses is a also a big part of the cost on that side. In many cases, it is even more difficult than with free licenses. Think about licenses that make it hard to change the hardware, or licenses that force you to enjoy long, very boring phone calls etc.

I do want to note that while there are certainly a lot of horror stories with proprietary licences, there _are_ a lot of proprietary libraries and such that do a damn good job of being dev-friendly.

If you're going to use proprietary code, at least try to use proprietary code written by competent, helpful people. :)
