I like digiKam a lot and am amazed at how competitive it is with well-funded commercial photo managers. With a couple more features, it could be the best photo manager available.

I just wish it had a decent slideshow capability, including the ability to reorder pictures. That's what keeps me from using it, personally.

What do you use instead?

I tried a few photo management apps year or two ago, but Digikam seemed best of them even for my and my relatives simple use-cases: downloading photos from camera or importing existing ones from specific directories, quickly reviewing & removing bad/redundant photos, sorting or tagging groups of the images according to the occasions where you take them and showing a slideshow of images in one of "folders".
