Time to vote on the openSUSE Strategy! [LWN.net]

Members of the openSUSE project are encouraged to vote on the openSUSE strategy proposal. "We're not asking everyone if they think it is a perfect fit for themselves — we're a diverse community and we'll never fully agree on anything. But this proposal has seen lots of thought, discussion, revision, input — it is arguably the best we could come up with to describe who we are and where we want to go. So the question is — do we agree this describes us? Is it good enough for us to support? Can we move on with this?"

As a Gentoo developer, I have a hard time believing OpenSUSE is the world's most flexible distribution (as the strategy says).

Could you please point me to the equivalents of Open Build Service and openSUSE Studio in Gentoo? These two services provide the flexibility that I, as an openSUSE user, value very high and haven't yet found in this combination in other Linux distributions.

Please note especially, that the Open Build Service is not just for creating openSUSE packages. I use it to create packages in native formats for several other Linux distributions, and it is one of the reasons why openSUSE is my preferred development platform. So, please, your answer should cover that "looking-beyond-a-single-distribution" aspect of OBS as well -- Gentoo-only stuff wouldn't play in the same league.

Exactly. The strategy makes clear (or, it should) that the openSUSE community has a wider scope than just the distribution. The tools around it, including OBS, KIWI but also our web infrastructure like connect and openFATE are an important part of our identity. We build distribution tools as much as a distribution!

OBS is a fine thing and Gentoo doesn't need to duplicate that. A backend will serve the purpose however there is no such thing as "openSUSE Studio". There is SUSE Studio which is a proprietary product from Novell. I don't think anyone in the openSUSE community has a reason to be proud of it.
