you are missing the main reason why certs change every year.

because this lets the CAs charge people more every year to maintain their website.

Uh, excuse me? I agree with you 100%. Certificates change very frequently because the CAs have a strong financial incentive to use short expiry times. That is exactly the position I was arguing.

Perhaps you are confusing me with Lennie.
