Not sure GEM is a really good example, as the people behind it seem to be firmly in the 'who cares about portability, only Linux matters' camp. In fact, it was with GEM that the DRM code stopped being developed shared between Linux and the BSDs.

This is all the more interesting as one of those people was previously a major FreeBSD graphics driver developer. Something rather dramatic seems to have happened there at some point, still not sure what that was.
