It's not a real SCM until it has a Windows Explorer add-in and a Visual Studio add-in.

At least not in the world where you have non-programmers (like designers) working on files and who aren't ever, ever going to use a command line for anything, or for primarily Windows-based shops with hordes of "i need Intellisense to tell me how to code" developers (or hordes of "I can code without Intellisense, but why in god's name would I want to?").

While I do use emacs, I wouldn't call myself a die-hard emacs user. Anyway, emacs is not an IDE, so I don't see what this has to do with IDEs.

Emacs can easily be considered an IDE. It handles source-code files well, and integrates with most common build processes, debuggers, and version-control systems. There are also some Emacs extensions which contribute additional IDE-like features:

Emacs not an IDE? What criteria do you use to distinguish it from an IDE?

I've been using various source control systems for over 20 years now, and I haven't yet found a need for either of those things...
