I had tried to make this exact point in an earlier article. The "preferred form for making modifications" is NOT a pristine source and a large group of patches. RedHat (and anyone else) is fully within the GPL by doing what they are now doing. There is much bitching now only because they used to do something else which some people had become dependent upon.
