As an app developer I've certainly made decisions based upon the most popular platform, why spend a lot of time to support >10% of the market? As an app user it's nice when you can easily port an application to another OS or system.
*BSD developers might try to cooperating with Linux developers in areas where Linux is getting far ahead. Why reinvent the wheel? Putting some egos aside might help.
