After hours and hours of hard work I can now tell you with a lot of
pride that there is a successor to Linux Mint LXDE based on Debian. A
new release based on Linux Mint Isadora ported to Debian Squeeze has now
been released. There is only a 32-bits version available as I don't have
a 64-bits machine. The advantage of LXDE over GNOME, KDE or XFCE is that
it is much snappier on old G3/G4 machines. The Mint themes make the
desktop look a lot sexier than standard Debian. Linux MintPPC comes with
a huge amount of preinstalled programs, aimed at the desktop user. A
small selection:
* Exaile Music Player
* Gimp
* Iceweasel and Epiphany browsers
* Evolution Mail
* Pidgin
* Transmission
* Abiword
The installer should be used after a base system Debian Squeeze
installation. It will then automatically download and install the
programs. It will also install all the required Mint programs and
themes.
It has to be noted that this is an unoffical Linux Mint portage, not
supported by the Linux Mint team. That is the reason I had to change the
name of Linux Mint into Linux MintPPC, to make absolutely clear that
this project is independent from the official Linux Mint.
