the point that he is missing is that closed source vendors have to develop and maintain their entire product. Linux vendors are able to use the work of all the other Linux vendors (ok, not quite all, but the vast majority, and even some of that they don't use falls into the "failed experiment that we don't have to try because we watched someone else try" category)
