Actually, this sounds very like the XFree/XOrg split!

Keith Packard (the main X coder) was more and more marginalised by the XFree people that when they finally removed his commit access he struck out on his own.

So XOrg was, in reality, just XFree with a new name and management structure, the dev team was pretty much unchanged.

Sounds very much like the Open/LibreOffice split is proceeding in the same manner ...
