many monitors and TVs have inputs protected by HDCP, being able to feed data to those inputs is a useful thing to be able to do.

My understanding is that you can do this without any HDCP keys. Most monitors will happily display unencrypted signals.

One of the points is that for people designing hardware that don't want encrypted signals, this HDCP key discovery is of little use. They would just send an unencrypted signal and it would be displayed.
