It's been a little weird to watch how anti android the kernel community has gotten (the Android Kernel talk at Linuxcon was an eye openner there). There were rumblings in that crowd that Google should make their platform less open to applications to avoid wakelocks. Being more like Apple doesn't really seem to be very open source friendly.

As someone that likes open source at all levels of the stack, and has tried to do mobile development before, Android is a breath of fresh air. It has an SDK that works great on Linux desktops, lets you access all the sensors without having to pay additional fees, and every carrier except AT&T hasn't restricted the phone to the official android market. I do get that people want even more openness, but this is a pretty big step in the right direction.
